What is a ductless heat pump?A heat pump is basically an air conditioner that works in reverse. Instead of having cold coils on the inside and heat coils on the outside, they are reversed. A heat pump has a switch (or thermostat) to change from the A/C function to the heating function. When in heat mode, it provides hot air to the home. When the switch is turned to A/C mode, the effect reverses, and the home is cooled. A blower pulls air from inside and circulates it against the coils, then blows cool air back to the home. A heat pump is tremendously energy efficient and will save money in energy costs compared to a traditional A/C and heating system. Newer units can be installed less expensively than a traditional gas unit. Plus, the heat pump can heat or cool a home up to 2.5x more efficiently than an A/C unit using electric power. This makes a heat pump a cost-effective and efficient option for homeowners. Heat pumps come in a variety of models to accommodate different sizes of installations. The size you choose depends primarily on the size of your home (or office). A rule of thumb is: most homes need a capacity of two to five tons to heat and cool the home adequately year round. Comparisons between models before making a decision is important when deciding if a heat pump is right for your home. Given the right factors, heat pumps will be a valuable addition to your home.
